Summary

It's been a minute but we're back for the first time since Wimbledon to catch up on everything which has happened over the last couple of weeks. With David away on holiday, Catherine and Matt are joined by friend of the pod Charlie Eccleshare for a long overdue appearance!

In a packed show, we discuss the strangeness of the post-Wimbledon period in tennis, titles for Lorenzo Musetti, Bernarda Pera and Casper Ruud, the return to form of Dominic Thiem and Anett Kontaveit, our early US Open favourites, Naomi Osaka's split with Wim Fissette, Serena Williams' intention to play a full schedule ahead of New York, the cancellation of the ATP China swing, the extraordinary honesty from Daria Kasatkina and Andrey Rublev in their interview with Russian journalist Vitya Kravchenko, and the ATP's partnership with You Can Play, an organisation committed to furthering LGBTQ+ inclusion in sport.

Hi, this is Billie Jean King. This is Mary and Bartoli. I'm Matt's Belander. This is Mary

Carillo. This is Pam Shriver. This is Yannick Noah and you're listening to the tennis podcast.

Well folks, we are back. It has been two very long weeks since the end of Wimbledon 2022. Just

0:27.6

long enough, hopefully, for you to miss us. Not miss tennis, of course, because tennis never stops,

0:33.7

but maybe miss us. Unless you're a friend of the podcast, in which case we have produced three

0:38.5

shows over the course of the last couple of weeks. There's a Wimbledon review show featuring

0:43.9

voice notes from a lot of the usual suspects and also a little bonus voice note from the one and

0:51.0

only Sue Barker, which I think is worth becoming a friend of the tennis podcast for in itself.

0:57.0

And we've done two Q&A shows as well. David is on holiday. True to his word, not on this podcast.

1:03.5

True to his word. He said, you can do a podcast if you like, but I'm not going to be on it. So here we are

1:10.4

in Kings Cross in a lovely Brasery. That is why you're hearing ambiance. And we are joined by

1:16.4

Charlie Eccleshire, formerly of the Telegraph, now of the Athletic and the Wimbledon podcast.

1:23.2

We've got a rival podcaster on that. What are we doing? Welcome, Charlie.

1:27.5

Hello, how are you doing? Guess we're back. We're not even your first podcaster the day, Charlie.

1:32.1

No, I know, but it's been too long. It's been a long, long old way. So I'm looking forward to this.

1:39.1

This is a very Eccleshire part of town, though, isn't it? Because we're Kings Cross, not far from

1:44.8

St. Pancras, where we got the Euro Star back from Paris a few weeks ago and we were shouted out

1:51.9

on the streets and it was none other than Charlie's mum. Yeah, my mum is a big fan of the pod.

1:57.4

I think she was quite star-struck, seeing you all. She saw David first. She didn't catch us at our

2:03.1

best, Charlie, we'd just been Euro Star. It wasn't at the Tube Strike Day as well. The hem of a

2:08.9

Grand Slam. Yep, we'd spent a lot of time at the Guardian or anyway, it was lovely to see your mum.

2:16.8

And yeah, I got off the tube at the wrong stop today. So I actually walked past that very spot.
