Summary

How do you make sense of a day that both honored Martin Luther King, Jr. and ushered in a president determined to demolish progress at warp speed? Brittany calls up two people equipped to do it: group chat members Dr. David J. Johns and Dr. Brittney Cooper. Together, they trace the origin of white obsession with “meritocracy,” the price the country has paid for the success of Barack Obama, the fact that more information does not equal more knowledge, and how we’ll survive this moment the way we would a storm. Plus: Brittany honors the life and legacy of her friend (and frequent UNDISTRACTED guest) Cecile Richards. supposed to learn? So, to get out of my mind and into my body, which I invite you to do with me,

1:06.6

the feeling I'm feeling is sadness.

1:14.4

There's some anger and rage and frustration and a lot of fear mixed up in it, too, if I'm honest.

And it's just manifesting in a set of hot tears coming from my eyes.

1:28.6

But really the place where I feel it is in my chest.

1:34.0

Every breath feels heavy.

1:40.4

I feel like I'm gasping for something that should already belong to me.

1:45.0

For something that I should have just because I'm human.

1:50.0

And for something that keeps feeling further and further out of reach

1:55.0

because somebody else feels like I'm not human.

1:59.0

Yesterday was the day was like, I'm not human.

2:13.1

Yesterday was the day that a lot of our lives changed for at least the next four years, for I hope, just the next four years.
