Good morning. Welcome to way too early on this Monday, September 12th. I'm John Famier. Thanks for starting your day with us. We'll begin with the war in Ukraine, where Ukrainian

forces are claiming major victories on the battlefield after recapturing large parts of territories in the eastern

part of the country. Local officials say that Ukrainian troops on Saturday took back the strategic

city of Izzyam and areas around the country's second largest city, Kharkiv, which forced Russian forces

into retreat.

Russia initially claimed it was pulling back to regroup.

However, Moscow yesterday had to acknowledge that it had lost nearly all of the northern

parts of Kharkiv.

Ukraine's commander-in-chief says their forces have retaken more than 1,000 square miles of land since the

counter-offensive began at the beginning of the month. That's more area than Russian forces have

captured in all of the operations in Ukraine since April, the early months of the war. Videos from

Kharkiv yesterday showed local residents celebrating and hugging Ukrainian troops.

Analysts say the fast-moving Ukrainian offensive shows that the tide of war is shifting.
