Startling moments over the Washington, D.C. area yesterday as fighter jets are scrambled to track a private plane that ultimately crashed.

And we'll begin this morning with a deadly plane crash near the nation's capital.

Yesterday afternoon, the military scrambled two F-16 fighter jets to respond to a private

business jet that was flying over restricted airspace in D.C.

The response caused a loud sonic boom that was heard across the region and unsettled many of the residents there.

Here's some of the sound surveillance cameras captured. The sound was heard across many miles. The Sessna was not responding to radio transmissions.

It then crashed in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. Officials say there were no

survivors. According to the FAA, the plane took off from Tennessee and was headed to Long Island

when it suddenly turned around and flew back down towards Washington. It's not clear why the pilot

was not responding or how the plane crashed.

The New York Times reports the plane was owned by the company Encore Motors of Melbourne, Florida.

The man who runs it, John Rumpel, told the times that his daughter, his two-year-old granddaughter,

her nanny, and a pilot were aboard the flight.

He says they were returning to East Hampton, New York.
