A bipartisan Senate working group led by Democrat Chris Murphy of Connecticut and Republican

John Cornyn of Texas will hold a remote meeting today in hopes of reaching a basic framework for gun reform.

Senator Cornyn said yesterday that many gun issues should be discussed at the state level,

but said background checks, mental health, and red flag laws are things that Congress can address.

After spending nearly four hours with Evaldi families on Sunday,

the president returned to the White House yesterday

and expressed optimism that, quote,

rational Republicans will make a move this time.

He decried easy access to high-caliver weapons

while also discussing the limitations of his own power.

There's a constitution.

I can't fix it.

I can do the things that are done, and any objective action I can take, I'll continue to

take.

But I can't outlaw a weapon.
