Less than 24 hours after a Minneapolis jury convicted former police officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd,

the Justice Department opened a civil rights investigation to determine whether the

city's law enforcement officers engage in a pattern or practice of policing that violates

the Constitution or federal civil rights laws.

Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the investigation.

Yesterday's verdict in the state criminal trial does not address potentially systemic policing

issues in Minneapolis. The investigation I am announcing today will assess whether the Minneapolis

Police Department engages in a pattern or practice of using excessive force, including during protests.
