This morning, countries around the world are scrambling to contain a whirring new strain of COVID-19.

Since being discovered in South Africa, the Omicron variant has spread to neighboring African countries

appearing in Ontario. Later this morning, President Biden is expected to give the nation an update

on his administration's response to the new variant. Members of the White House COVID response

team briefed the president

yesterday and warned that it could take two weeks before there is definitive information

on the characteristics of the new variant. Here's some of what Dr. Anthony Fauci said yesterday

about this new strain of COVID-19. It just kind of exploded in the sense that when you look in South Africa, you were having a low level of infection.

And then all of a sudden there was this big spike.

And when the South Africans looked at it, they said, oh, my goodness, this is a different virus than we've been dealing with.
