32-year-old David DePopp home by breaking a back window. A senior U.S. official tells NBC News that once inside the home, he confronted Paul Pelosi shouting, where is Nancy? Where is Nancy?

According to the San Francisco District Attorney, Pelosi called 911 from a bathroom,

where he had a veiled conversation with a police dispatcher who then recognized the situation

as dire. When police arrived, they say DePap attacked Pelosi, smashing a hammer into his head

and arms, fracturing his skull. Police also say that zip ties

were found at the scene. They didn't specify how many or discuss their intended purpose.

De Pop is in custody right now and will likely be charged with the attempted murder of the

Speaker's husband as early as today.

Paul Pelosi is still recovering from surgery for a skull fracture.

He is, though, expected to make a full recovery.

Speaker Pelosi put out a statement late Saturday, which reads in part this way.

A violent man broke into our family home.

Demanded to confront me and brutally attacked my husband Paul.

She added, quote, our children, our grandchildren, and I are heartbroken and traumatized by the life-threatening attack.

Meanwhile, a review of David DePopp' online accounts show he was part of the

far right world of hate. He appeared to operate a website with a wide variety of posts

touching on anti-Semitism and conspiracy theories involving anti-vax hysteria and voter fraud.

Many of his posts were published in just the past few months.

The website did not mention Nancy Pelosi by name.

Some top Republicans are rejecting any assertion of a link between heated GOP rhetoric and the attack on Paul Pelosi.
