The United States officially hit its borrowing limit yesterday morning,

which means that Treasury Department now is forced to take extraordinary measures so the government can continue paying its bills. In a letter to congressional leadership yesterday, Treasury Secretary

Janet Yellen confirmed the country will be able to meet its obligations until at least June 5th.

Until then, she says Treasury will sell investments to raise cash and not reinvest in some retirement funds to save money and therefore not create new debt.

This gives Congress a deadline of just 136 days to craft legislation to raise the country's debt ceiling
