My name is Mark Lachrits. I was an assistant chief counsel on the Senate Watergate committee staff.

I'm Mary Deiorio.

I was hired initially as a researcher and then graduated to become an investigator on the Senate Watergate staff.

We've only been married for 45 years.

We think we're off to a good start. Mark Lachrits and Mary Dioreo went on their first date on June 17th of 1972.

It was only later that they realized it was the same night as the Watergate break him. They had been going out for

less than a year when Mark, who was in his final semester at Harvard Law School,

got a call from someone high up on the staff at the Senate Watergate committee.

He was calling to offer market job.

This was in April of 1973, about a month before public televised hearings on Watergate,

were scheduled to begin. The Senate had voted 77 to 0 to form the committee and hold the hearings.

The committee's mission would be to figure out whether illegal, improper, or unethical activities had taken place during the 1972 election.
