Summary

Donald Trump and Joe Biden met in the first head-to-head debate of the campaign yesterday evening. The result was a frenzied 90 minutes of outbursts and interruptions from which neither candidate emerged well. Biden lambasted the President as a 'clown', while Trump ruthlessly attacked the Democratic challenger's family, ignoring the tragic death of his son, Beau. Freddy Gray speaks to Kate Andrews about whether the debate could possibly have been any worse.

Donald Trump and Joe Biden. We both stayed up quite late watching it. I think

1:14.8

it's fair to say it was a horror show. It was horrendous, Freddie. It was painful. The back of

1:21.0

my left eye hurts, and I'm hoping that was from the debate, not something more serious, but the debate

1:25.5

was pretty seriously bad. It was uncomfortable. It was

1:29.2

angry. It wasn't a debate. It's really hard to believe that any hearts and minds were swayed

1:34.5

watching the two of them go at each other. The president was significantly ruder than Joe Biden was,

1:40.9

but in order to rise to the occasion, you had things coming out of Joe Biden's

1:45.0

mouth that didn't feel right, telling the president to shut up, calling him a clown.

1:49.6

Yeah. You mean sink to the occasion.
