He had been on overnight shifts long enough to know that every building had its own sound once people left it alone.

During the day,

this one was easy to understand. Phones rang, doors open, someone was always talking somewhere,

and the usual office noise covered everything else. At night, the place became simpler and stranger at the same time. The sounds that remained were smaller, but they stood out more clearly because there was

nothing to hide them.

The hum of the vents, the occasional creak from a settling wall, the soft click of a door

easing fully shut a few seconds after it had been opened.

After a few months, he knew them all well enough that he no longer paid attention.

That was one of the reasons he liked the job.

Once the evening staff cleared out and the exterior doors were locked, the building felt controlled.

He made his rounds, checked the lower level, passed through the outer offices,

looped through a smaller administrative section, and returned to

the desk at the center of the first floor before starting again. Most nights, nothing happened.

That predictability suited him. The administrative section was the kind of room. People stopped

noticing after a while. Four desks, two file cabinets, a glass front office that nobody seemed to use

anymore, and a row of rolling chairs that were usually pushed in neatly at the end of the day.

It wasn't important. There was never anything to report there, which was probably why he noticed

the chair the first time. It was pulled back from one of the desks by a few inches just enough to break the straight

line of the room.
