Hello, this is Beyond Today from BBC Radio 4 with me, Tina Dehealy.

Every day we ask one big question about one big story.

Today was Larnell Bruce killed because he was black. 9-1-1-1-1.

I'm calling you from the 7-11 on Burnside.

Two people are fighting India feeding each other.

And are they white, black, piece in our Hispanic?

Well, one is white, one is black.

America has a troubled history with racism.

Despite important progress from the civil rights movement to the election of President Barack Obama,

racial tensions are high.

And in recent years how politicians talk about and respond to white

supremacists and far-right groups has changed. And you had some very bad people in that

group, but you also had people that were very fine people on both sides.

Mabin Azar is a journalist and filmmaker for the BBC.

Last time he was on beyond Today he'd been investigating a police shooting in his hometown of

Huddersfield. This time he has travelled to Portland, Oregon to make a film about the death of a 19 year old African American.

The footage of Larnell Bruce running for his life went viral at the time, raising alarm about white supremacy.

But in Oregon, Mabin uncovered a story far more complex

than he'd ever anticipated.
