America's Senate confirmed Kevin Walsh as chairman of the Federal Reserve.

The 54-45 vote was the closest since Senate approval became a requirement for the Post in 1977.

Only one Democrat backed Mr. Walsh.

Now he must deal with rising inflation.

On Wednesday, the producer price index, a measure of wholesale inflation,

climbed by 6% in the 12 months to April,

the biggest increase since December 2022. Donald Trump arrived in Beijing for a summit with Xi Jinping, China's leader. Talks will focus on commerce.

A group of chief executives, including Jensen Huang, boss of NVIDIA, a chipmaker, have joined the trip.

But security will also feature.

Mr Trump said he will not ask Mr. Xi for any help with Iran,

but suggested the pair will discuss arms sales to Taiwan, alarming America's Asian allies.

Sequea Stama said he has full confidence in West Streeting,

despite reports that the Health Secretary will challenge him for leadership of Britain's

Labour Party as soon as Thursday. Mr. Streeting met the Beligood Prime Minister briefly on
