Early in the pandemic, Apollo Theater executive producer Camila Forbes would join a weekly

Zoom game night with friends from her Howard University days, including This Is Us, actress

Susan Kellechi Watson and author Tanahasi Coates. Then came the police killing of George Floyd

and protesters took to the streets.

But I remember that Saturday night,

like we just, we all were on the Zoom

and no one even brought up, you know, the game.

We just all sat in our respective homes,

watched what was happening across the country, across the cities.

And Sue actually brought up, man, I wish we could do, you know, between the world and me.

It turns out they could. Forbes, who had previously mounted a stage version of Coates' famous book

between the world and me, adapted the work again, making the author's emotional letter from

a black father to his son into a film for HBO. As the pandemic raged, Forbes directed a huge

cast that included Oprah Winfrey, Angela Davis, Mahershula Ali, and more. She tells us how she did

it, generally from a distance. But first on the news, banter, WarnerMedia, stuns Hollywood and theater owners.
