Welcome to the dig, a podcast from Jacobin Magazine. My name is Daniel Denver and I'm broadcasting

from Providence, Rhode Island. It was just the 20th anniversary of 9-11 and so also, of course,

the anniversary of the war on terror that Bush declared soon thereafter, a war that was continued

by his democratic successor, Obama, a technocrat who tried to make the war on terror into something

more sensible and sustainable, a candidate upon whom many had mistakenly projected their anti-war

hopes. Our victory against terrorism won't be measured in a surrender ceremony at a battleship

or a statue being pulled to the ground. Victory will be measured in parents taking their kids to

school, immigrants coming to our shores, fans taking in a ballgame, a veteran starting a business,

a bustling city street, a citizen shouting her concerns at a president.
