Hey folks, Captain Bill Tody here. I'm going to warn you up front. This spot has nothing to do with World War II. But, you know, each week on our podcast, Seth, it goes through a little bit of my military background, my Navy background. We've never really talked about my civilian background, my post-Navy career. And I actually spent 15 years in

0:22.6

industry starting at various companies, Hewlett Packer, Dreythian, and ended up at L3 Harris,

0:31.0

CEO of a company called Spartan. And throughout that 15-year industry career, I did my best to hire veterans

0:42.4

and to my companies and hired hundreds over the course of that 15 years. What I learned over

0:48.8

time was that those veterans weren't succeeding in their civilian careers in the way that I would have hoped.

0:56.5

Now, veterans bring a whole bunch of great skills to the table when they join industry,

1:02.2

teamwork, the ability to endure through hardship, what we call the military, embracing the suck.

1:08.5

They become really good at that kind of stuff.

1:13.0

But they fail in other ways.

1:21.3

And in my success rate in hiring veterans was nowhere near as good as I was, as I hoped it would be.

1:27.2

So towards the end of my career, I tried to do some analysis and figure out why my success rate wasn't so good. And it occurred to me

1:28.7

over time an analysis that the problems weren't one-off problems. I could counsel individual

1:35.7

veterans to see if they could do a better job, but the problems turned out to be systemic. It affected

1:41.3

all of them. And the thing that really surprised me is that the problems were

1:45.7

created by the military itself in the training that they gave active duty folks when they left

1:53.8

active duty. Now, when you leave active duty, the military purports to want to prepare you for civilian life.

2:01.9

But what they're really interested in is making you feel good about your military career.

2:06.7

I don't blame them for that.

2:08.6

What I do blame them for is misleading veterans as they leave active duty and telling them that their skills that they gained on active duty are going to be directly

2:17.8

translatable to civilian life, and often they are not. If the veteran doesn't modify

2:23.6

the way he approached his active duty job, or her active duty job, then she's going to

2:30.6

fail in a civilian career. And that's what I learned over the course of that 15 years.
