Summary

Welcome to this bonus episode of China Compass, the 7th in a weekly series called “The Prison Pulpit”. I'm your China travel guide, Missionary Ben. Follow me on X (@chinaadventures) where I share a new Chinese city to pray for daily. You can learn more about that at PrayforChina.us

You can also check out my Substack (ChinaCall.substack.com) where I post a variety of articles about China and missions, and missions in China. I will probably even post the full letter that I will be reading from today. But my current latest post is entitled, Cherokee Theology: The Last Words of Dewey Sanders, is in honor of one of my favorite men and mentors who passed away six years ago this week: https://chinacall.substack.com/p/cherokee-theology

Today we are looking at a family letter written by Wang Yi and his wife, Jiang Rong, twelve days before their arrest on December 9, 2018. It is their annual letter written to their congregation. My hope is that you can get a glimpse into the relative normalcy of their lives, and also be encouraged to pray for Wang Yi’s wife and children who face life circumstances not unfamiliar to most of us, albeit without their faithful pastor father in the home.

Just saying that name brings joy to my heart, because that article is in honor of one of my

favorite men and mentors who passed away six years ago this week.

He's the longest standing member in my home church in Oklahoma.

1:11.1

He was at the time of his death and was just a regular fixture at everything related to men

1:17.5

and ministry with the young people, the kids, and camping and just all the things.

1:22.9

And what we didn't realize about Dewey until after he died, unfortunately, was how much of a theological mind he was.

1:29.9

He was mostly deaf, and so we had a hard time communicating with him for many years.

1:35.1

As he got older, he was in his mid to late 80s when he passed away.

1:38.8

But I guess we assumed because of his deafness and the difficulty in communicating with him that he wasn't a deep

thinker. And so we came across some of his journals and writings after he died. And I was really

1:52.2

impressed by some of the things I found there. And so I put together kind of an anthology of Dewey's

last words. And so that's the latest thing on my substack.

2:01.0

I just wanted to mention that in honor of him.

2:03.2

But today, I really want to focus on a letter.
