Summary

The American future is in question, and it is up to the present generation of civic leaders to ensure that the nation continues to thrive. The United States faces new challenges to its economic and social infrastructure, as well as the very cultural and spiritual qualities which comprise the foundations of our social compact. And how, beyond America's borders, should the United States responsibly project its power and influence?

The American future depends on addressing five issues of key strategic importance.  Get them right, and the 21st century holds promise for the United States. Get them wrong, and Americans could see their nation vulnerable to precipitous decline. What are the Big Five? How can Americans secure a free and prosperous nation for the next generation? Listen, as Walter Russell Mead, the James Clarke Chace Professor of Foreign Affairs and Humanities at Bard College and Editor-at-Large of The American Interest, will analyze "The Big Five: America's Make-or-Break Challenges."

The event was recorded on March 18, 2014.

I've had a long association with Tikva and very much enjoyed it.

0:09.6

I've had some very valuable interns and students coming out of the process,

some of whom are with us here tonight.

0:16.0

So it feels like a little bit like a homecoming for me to be with Tikva.

0:22.7

What I... You know, I did my thinking about the five biggest challenges facing the United States

0:29.1

before President Putin made his most recent move.

0:33.8

I still think he's a wannabe.

0:41.3

He wants to be one of the five biggest challenges facing the United States. I don't think he's there yet. However, I do think if we don't take

0:48.6

some thought and get a more forward-looking policy in a number of areas in our foreign policy, we will start

0:58.3

having some new big challenges that don't necessarily all stem from domestic issues. And in fact,

1:06.1

the five challenges I want to talk about tonight are domestic in origin, though certainly whether or not we're

1:12.3

able to solve them has a many implications for our policy abroad. By the way, after the talk,

1:18.8

I'll be happy to have a question-and-answer discussion period, and if people want to talk about

1:24.0

foreign issues, well, you know, I'm game. So we can talk about whatever

1:28.8

is in your interest. Those of you who've been to Africa know what the five, what people

1:34.7

are talking about when they're talking about the big five animals. Those were originally

1:38.3

the five coolest animals to kill, but in our sort of modern, more, the five animals you want to get pictures of

1:47.9

on your safari in Africa. And they're all dramatic animals that present big challenges of

1:54.2

different kinds. So that's where I get the idea of the big five. And I would strongly urge all

2:00.1

of you as soon as you get the chance to go to Africa and see the Big Five for yourself. It's worth doing.

2:06.6

So the Big Five challenges that we face, many of them come from actually one overarching transformation in our society, that our society is passing through,
