Walmart's greeters are going away.

The friendly doorman and women have been an institution at the retailer since the 1980s,

but soon most Walmart stores will be saying goodbye to those smiling faces.

And that's a problem for greeters, many of whom have disabilities. In 2016, Walmart began phasing out the greeter job and offering those employees a new position called a host.

Unlike greeters, however, hosts must be able to lift 25 pounds and stand for long periods of time,

something many greeters with disabilities can't do.

As a result, greeters at about 1,000 stores have already lost their jobs, NPR reported last week. The greeter program will

officially shut down at the end of April, prompting outrage from many workers and their families.
