President Donald Trump has threatened to impose an additional 50% tariff on China that would take

effect midweek. That's unless the country removes a 34% retaliatory tariff on all imports from

the U.S.

slated to go into effect this Thursday.

On Truth Social, the president also threatened to cancel meetings China had requested,

though he said other countries would begin negotiating on trade immediately.

This comes as U.S. stocks have been all over the place as concerns about the global economy rise.

CNN's Vanessa Yerkevich is at the New York Stock Exchange.

Well, at 10 a.m. this morning shortly after, there was a post that came out on social media that said that the president was considering pausing tariffs for 90 days except on China.

When that post went out, we heard cheers on the floor

of the New York Stock Exchange, and we quickly saw all the indexes turn green. But the White

House came out shortly after and said that that was, quote, fake news, that that was not happening.

But what I'm hearing from investors here is that they're looking for some sense of

certainty. Meanwhile, about 900 United Auto Workers' Union members at five Stalances' plants in the

U.S. will be laid off for two or three weeks, starting today. Because their jobs producing

parts for plants in Canada and Mexico have been temporarily idled due to Trump's tariffs.

The Trump administration wants the Supreme Court to block today's deadline to bring back a man from Maryland

who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador.
