Our top stories.

The market sell-off, a railroad worker strike, reserves, deficit, Twitter, Starbucks, Amazon, and Google.

Major market averages traded further to the downside on Tuesday after a hotter than anticipated consumer price update spooked

investors. The NASDAQ composite was down nearly 5.2 percent. The SMP 500 lost

4.3 percent and the Dow was down nearly 4%.

August, C. P. P. I came in hotter than expected, with C. P.

year over year rising to 8.3% compared to the projected 8.1 percent.

Core C. P. P.E. I, year over year, also rose to 6.3 percent versus the expected 6.1 percent.

With the high inflation read, Fed Fund futures are now pricing in a 20% chance of a 100 basis point

Fed hike and an 80% chance of a 75 basis point rate hike.

The 10-year Treasury yield is up 5 basis points to 3.42 percent and the 2-year yield is up 17 basis points to 3.74 percent.

All 11 S&P sectors finish the session in the red and were led lower by the information technology sector and consumer services segment.

Consumer Discretionary has also struggled.

There's another inflation threat. A dual between 60,000 rail workers,

their unions, and some of the largest US railroad operators is already having an impact.

And still ahead at 12.01 a.m. Friday,

it's the deadline to agree to new work terms

or the workers will strike.

If talks go south, they could cost the nation $2 billion in economic output per day.
