Okay welcome to part two, the vocabulary and explanation section of Walden 2.

While this section of Walden is about clothing, Thoreau wrote a lot about very practical subjects, how people

clothe themselves, how people get their food, how people get shelter or housing. He felt these were very important questions and that these questions

were fundamental to larger questions about philosophy and life.

And of course when he's talking about clothing,

he's also talking about the basic idea of fashion

and living according to what other people value or what other people think is respected,

instead of living according to what is actually respectable,

what is really truthful or important. And of course he felt like people should not worry so

much about public opinion and should focus more on what is actually true and real. So that's the deeper meaning of this section of Walden.

So let's get started with some of the vocabulary.

In the beginning I use the word practical, or he uses the word practical again practical means

useful for everyday, everyday usefulness.

And he says that most people worry more about novelty than about utility.

Novelty again has this idea of fashion.

Novelty means newness or difference something new and interesting and exciting and

people worry about that in their clothing much more than they do about utility and

utility has a

a practicality

a usefulness
