Before war came to Ukraine, almost a year ago now,

the little town of Solidar had little reason to make the news.

No, no, only for the sprawling salt mines beneath it, the town itself was barely bigger than a village

with just 10,000 local residents, a little railway station and a few roads lined with apartment blocks.

Now, those roads are lined with rubble and Solidar is making headlines around the world.

The fight for the small salt mining town in eastern Ukraine has assumed an outsized significance.

But a women's Solidar would give Vladimir Putin his first victory after months of humiliating losses.

Last Friday, Russia claimed the fight for Solidar was over and they'd won.

But the Ukraine in military says the fighting is still ongoing.
