Volvararaginitis refers to inflammation and irritation of the vulva and vagina. It's a very common

condition affecting girls between the age of three and ten years. This irritation is caused by sensitive and thin skin and mucosa around the vulva and vagina

in young girls.

The vagina is more prone to colonization and infection with bacteria spread from the pieces.

Vover vaginitis can be exacerbated by wet nappies, use of chemicals or soaps in cleaning

constipation, thread worms, pressure on the area, for example, from horse riding, and heavily

chlorinated swimming pools. Volvovaginitis improves and is much less common after puberty

because estrogen that occurs after puberty helps to keep the skin and vaginal mucosa healthy and resistant to infection.

So how does it present?

Father vaginitis is a common presentation in young girls before puberty,

and it presents with soreness, itching, erythema around the labia, vaginal discharge, dysuria, which is burning or stinging

on urination, and constipation. A urine dipstick may show leukocytes but no nitrites. And this can be

misleading and result in a misdiagnosis as a urinary tract infection,

when in fact there's no infection in the urinary tract and there's just vulvovaginitis.
