This is episode 1. early dynastic Mesopotamia. Oh, In episode 22 of volume 1 we introduced Mesopotamia and the emergence of its civilization.

We mentioned the emergence of a settlement in Mesopotamia called Eridu, and we mentioned that this city

emerged in around 5,400 B.C. Erydo was built near the mouth of the Euphrates River, which over time is no

longer the mouth of the river thanks to silting pushing the shores of the Persian

Gulf back towards the Arabian Sea. Eridu prospered during the Ubayid period of Mesopotamia, which by 4,000 BC was replaced by the Uruk period, named after the settlement of Uruk.

Uruk was built on the ancient banks of the Yavrati River. We believe that Uruk is a terrific example of a small

settlement becoming a significant and stratified city state and was home to tens of thousands of Sumerians.

We can see important temples and walls were built at the settlement as the Uruk period of the fourth millennium
