It's May 1968 in the Andes Mountains, Peru.

A helicopter touches down on a rocky ledge near Machu Picchu.

The door opens and a woman's long tan leg emerges.

She's wearing a high-heeled sandal with

criss-crossing leather straps that end mid-dye. A chain small metal rings connected

to the

woman glints in the blazing mountain sun. The pilot yells out to her.

Keep low, watch out for those blades.

The woman is a model for Vogue.

She and another model are here with an entourage, a hair stylist, photographer, and editor.

The group trots away from the landing site in a low crouch.

They look around them in wonder at the peaks that poke out of snow-white expanses of clouds.

The photographer, a man named John Cowan, sets his camera case on the ground and

turns to the Vogue editor.

This is perfect, perfect. You get the hair and makeup done and I'll set up over there by the wall.

The helicopter pilot climbs out of the helicopter and walks over to them.

Like I said before, we got to leave the mountaintop by five o'clock.

It's dangerous up here after dark.
