Summary

Dressing for the summer is no easy feat, no matter where in the world you’re located. On this special episode, Nicole and Chioma are joined by contributing writer and former Vogue staffer Liana Satenstein. Liana, who heads up the Addressed column where she tackles all kinds of fashion dilemmas, came on to talk through all of the most pressing summer dressing issues.

“I like to write about the more saucy sides of what to wear and what not to wear,” Liana told the hosts, referencing one of her first installments in which she answered the question of whether or not a bra is mandatory for the workplace. The short answer: it depends. But the group was in agreement that the overly padded push-up bra or the “chicken cutlet” bra as Vogue Runway’s Sarah Mower termed it, is generally not the move.

They then moved on to the very toe-pical conversation of the summer shoe. Recorded on the heels of Mathieu Blazy’s Chanel resort show in which he debuted the controversial anti-shoe, feet were a hot topic. “Phalangeal fodder for the ages!” was Liana’s assessment, “I have to choose my words carefully, but those are deliciously demented demi-sandals.” The verdict was that this shoe was not intended for the filthy city streets, but might find a home on a red carpet or beach sometime soon. Instead, for those looking to show some toe this summer, Birkenstocks and kitten heels might be a more pragmatic choice.

Then came the evergreen dilemmas of what to do with unwanted hand-me-down from a loved one (“an albatross around my neck”) and how to clean and maintain a closet with limited space. Liana’s advice is to give yourself a time limit. “60 seconds, find one thing that you do not wear—I'm sure you can do it. Do that once a day for seven days, and at the end of the week you have seven pieces that you can part with.”

Other summer sartorial plights they addressed included how to put together an office appropriate outfit in the sweltering summer, what is on their summer shopping wishlists, and what the modern rules are for what to wear to someone else’s wedding. For more nuance than “don’t wear white”, tune in.

Hi. Well, hi again.

Hi again, yeah. I saw both of you this week. I know, which is so nice. I'd like to see you, Leanna. I'll take it. A new season is almost upon us. I mean summer. We thought that we would tackle some of the evergreen warm weather dressing quandaries.

But tell us, what do you like to write about it addressed? I like to write about, like, the more

1:07.6

saucy sides of what to wear and what not to wear like we the first

1:13.7

one that we did was bras I believe in the office and whether or not it was kosher not to wear a

1:20.6

bra in the office wow well I was I mean I'm so I'm sorry I'm such'm sorry, I'm such a boomer.

1:28.3

I'm sounding really boomerish, but what, no bra? I guess you can, no. Choma, you've, like, seen, like, you probably know what cup size I am at this point. I never wore a bra at the office. Like, for better, for worse. I mean, actually, probably for worse, Irene Kim goes, that's why you never got a promotion. is because you didn't wear her brought the office.

1:43.6

But I just thought because I was like,

1:46.0

for the record, you never got a promotion, is because you didn't wear a bra at the office. But I just thought, because I was like, for the record, you did get a promotion while you were here. Okay. Depends. Well, you can shape the narrative the way you want. I know. I did get a promotion. I did. From fashion writer to senior fashion writer. Yeah, I did. Let the record show. Yes. Okay, even though I didn't wear a bra. They saw past it, but anyone can see past my chest. It's very small. But I didn't think it was a big deal not to wear a bra on the office because I was like, you know what, actually. Sorry, not to digress, but I'm just, I feel like it actually makes sense for this. Be our guest. I, when I first came here, I was wearing like these insane, bulbous push-up bras from like T.J. Max because I was like a hangover from-me too. That's something that we have in common. I gave up my padded bras while I was at Vogue. Yeah, but that's the thing. I wrote about it. Wait. I think many years before you wrote about it. I was like, did I copy my own? Well, I mean, no, it's always relevant, right?

2:36.9

I think it years before you wrote about it. I was like, did I copy my own?

2:35.0

Well, I mean, no, it's always relevant, right?

2:37.0

I think it's such a, it's such a political item of clothing. Yeah. Bras are so political. They're just like, anything that's the closest to the body is really political. political. Your chicken cutlet braw? That's what Sarah Moher calls a padded bra because those pads are so big and clunky.

2:52.5

And you can slip them in and out. But I had one. And then I remember Jordan Bickham gave me that makeover when I first came here. Have you ever told the story about how you would dress up for your interview? Oh, yeah. That was rough. But it was great, actually, because I had nothing to wear, surprisingly, but also unsurprisingly. At the time, I was, I had, like, I just had nothing. I had zilch to wear, and I was wearing, remember Sally called me the night before, and she's like, what? Sally Singer. Yeah, Sally Singer. She called me, and she's like, what are you wearing? And I was like, I'm wearing a black blazer blazer she's like absolutely not and then I felt like an idiot because then I learned after that Anna everyone like everyone knew that like Anna

3:30.1

black is in a great color to wear for a Vogue interview I think that's kind of universally known yeah I didn't know that or a pantsuit like not the I love a pants suit unless it's zest. Zest, but not like you're going for like a corporate law interview. Just make it fashion. I know. Well, I didn't. So then Sally was like, we need to give you a makeover. So I came here and she had Chelsea Zalapani, one of the market editors at the time, dressed me from the closet, and it was a white shirt dress. I remember it, exactly. Yeah, and these green, suede mules, and then I had like my beat-up. Do you remember the brand? No. I don't remember any of the brands. I can't remember. Sounds about right for that time. Yeah. Yeah.
