Summary

In our annual vision series, we lay out a paradigm for what it means to apprentice under Jesus. To follow Jesus is to organize your entire life around three goals: to be with Jesus, to become like Jesus, and do what Jesus would do if he were you. This is our vision of practicing the way of Jesus, together.

Well tonight we kick off our fall vision series. We do this every single year

0:04.7

if you're new to Bridgetown. We take a few weeks in the fall as kind of feels

0:09.6

like a new year a little bit and the climate of our city to just recenter on

0:14.3

what exactly we mean by practicing the way of Jesus together in Portland.

0:19.8

Have you ever turned down an invitation and then later regretted it or

0:26.0

miss an opportunity and later kind of kicked yourself for it? What was I thinking?

0:31.6

0:36.6

is full of invitations. Take a job in another city to marry this person which

means not another person to go here to go there to start a business to stick it

0:46.5

out in your job whatever to end a relationship to start one whatever it is.

So the experience of receiving an invitation that comes at a high cost and

0:57.5

having to make a decision either yes or no is familiar to the human condition.

1:03.0

And as we all know it's especially hard when those decisions have the

1:07.6

potential to shape the trajectory of our life for decades to come or longer.

1:12.6

Now we just read two invitations of Jesus. The first was a general invitation

1:18.0

whoever wants to be my disciple come after me follow me. The second was a very

1:23.2

specific invitation to a wealthy young aristocrat. Sell everything you have, give it

1:28.8

to the poor and then come and follow me. Now in a little bit I want to circle back

1:33.8

to both invitations but for now notice that what the two invitations have in

1:39.1

common they are not invitations to rearrange the mental furniture in the

1:43.8

house of our mind and go to heaven when we die and in the meantime enjoy living

1:48.0

in Portland and just I don't know be nice which is what a lot of people think it
