Over NBC's coast-to-coast network of independent affiliated stations, the University of

Chicago Roundtable. Today is from a Harris Foundation meeting held recently on the University

of Chicago campus. The Roundtable brings you a discussion of how to deal with communist

subversions. Taking part in this transcribed discussion for Mandel Hall or Dwight McDonald's

staff members of the New Yorker Magazine, Dan Will Bell, sociologist of Columbia University,

and Quincy Rice, political scientist of the University of Chicago. Now, first of here,

Mr. Wright. In the first and larger over a century and a half ago,

Thomas Jefferson said that there be any among us who wish to dissolve this union or continue

to public and form. Lessons stand undisturbed as monuments to the spaces with which error of

opinion may be tolerated where reason is less free to combat it. Today, research is going on

in one of our important universities on the world's revolution of our time. Its originators say it

is based, now folks, on the proposition that the 20th century has been witnessing the emergence

of a world of garrison, prison, state. This involves the reversal of the prevailing 19th

century termings for the democratic, international community and the close. No one familiar with

the development in science, Italy, Nazi Germany, Franco Spain, communist Russia, and communist China,

can question this trans. Some observers of the espionage acts, the political trials, the

congressional committees, the publications such as red channels, the law of the parties and the federal

service and academic institutions and the new methods of invading the privacy of the citizens,

three times of an infruching garrison, prison, state, even in the United States.

Is Jefferson's confidence in the self-sustaining power of freedom reasonable under present

conditions? Can freedom of discussion protect the state against those who use freedom to destroy it?
