In July 2020, Ukrainian journalist Victoria Rashina, her friends call Oveka, set off on a trip, a dangerous one that she had made a few times before.

This was, we think, the fourth time that she'd gone into occupied Ukraine since the full-scale invasion.

You can't just cross the front line.

You can't just run under the machine guns and hop over the line.

So she took a really roundabout route.

Victoria crossed into Poland, then Lithuania, then Latvia,

and from there into Russia,

where she planned to make her way towards a city in occupied Ukraine.

She was there looking for these things called black sites.
