things are so far behind the U.S. and the U.K. on the European continent, including here in Switzerland.

As you'll hear, it's a combination of factors, starting with the limited supply of vaccines.

But there also appears to be something deeper, a kind of mistrust in general of vaccinations

in parts of Europe. And there is what looks like a sort of general risk aversion,

which may explain the panic in recent days over side effects stemming from the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine.

To be honest, I think there's something else at work.

It may come down to the differing appetites for managing risk among developed societies.

That determines their willingness or lack thereof to embrace innovation, put their faith in technology,

and entrust non-state institutions like corporations and drug companies to act in good faith.
