75 years ago today the war in Europe ended. It was a day of great celebration but also great uncertainty.

Churchill said, you know, this is your victory and the crowd shouted back,

no, it's yours.

Yet two months later, the British had voted Churchill out of office.

The anniversary of V.E. Day was supposed to be marked with street parties and concerts.

Instead, people all over Britain will mark it at home, as the country is once more in the

grip of a crisis.

There's not going to be a sudden moment when this is one and when the wretched virus signs a surrender document

and gives up its arms. That's not going to happen.
