The exploits of women detectives in the Victorian era were dramatic, secretive and often

dangerous. Sarah Lodge is the author of a new book on these sleuths called The Mysterious

Case of the Victorian Female Detective. I spoke to her to find out

more about the roles that they played in 19th century crime fighting. Thanks for joining me, Sarah.

It's lovely to have you on the podcast. I wonder if you could introduce us to the extraordinary

world of Victorian female detectives. What kind of detective work did women

take on in the 19th century? Well, the truth is they took on lots of different kinds of

detective work. So there were women who were working for private inquiry agencies, and some of them

ran their own agencies.

And those women were doing a lot of work that was really connected with adultery cases,

so people who wanted a divorce, who were looking to investigate

or potentially even frame their errant space of whom they wanted rid,
