We begin in Venezuela, where the main opposition leader, Maria Carina Machado,

has briefly been detained while taking part in a nationwide protest against the

upcoming inauguration of President Maduro for a third six-year term later today, Friday.

Until Thursday, Ms. Mashado had not been seen in public since going into hiding last August.

Before being arrested, she had urged people to back Edmundo Gonzalez, who says he was

the real winner of July's election and declared that the government of Nicholas Maduro was over.
