Episode 148 Velma Nesset Part 1 of 2

64 year old Velma Nesset set out on April 19^th, 1982, at 4:30 a.m. to walk to her job as a cleaning lady at the Permian Mall in Odessa, TX. When she did not show up for work, people looked for her, and then called the police. Velma’s partially undressed body was found in a drainage culvert under the mall parking lot. She had been stabbed, bludgeoned and raped. The logical suspect, a mentally challenged man who worked at the mall, was tried for her murder. But after that, her case went cold. A Texas Ranger reinvestigation in the mid 2000s isolated a male DNA profile, but the offender was not in CODIS. When he was finally named through IGG, police tracked the man down, and he had quite a story to tell them. According to him, he did not act alone.

1:25.0	Police officer Tommy Morris was concerned. Moonlighting as head of security for the Permian Mall, now known as Music City Mall, the Odessa Police Detective Sergeant was the go-to for matters involving shoplifting or public safety at his second job. But he was also concerned with the safety of mall employees. That's why on April 19th, just before noon, he received a call from Harry Callahan, general manager of the Permian Mall.
1:51.6	Harry told Detective Sergeant Morris and Officer Darrell Gilbert that one of the mall employees, a cleaning lady named Velma Nesset, had not shown up for work that morning.
2:01.6	Employee tardiness or absence did not fall under the purview of mall security, but Callahan
2:06.3	insisted that Velma was never late for work. She showed up for her 5 a.m. shift every day she was
2:11.7	scheduled without fail. If she couldn't come in, she always rang the office to inform them.
2:17.8	Further, Callahan had called the next-of-kin listed on Velma's employment paperwork.
2:23.0	This was Velma's adult daughter, Joyce.

2:28.4	The two had been supposed to meet for lunch at noon at Velma's apartment.
