I'm Drew Nelson. In Nevada, police say a Utah mother shot her young daughter inside a Las Vegas hotel room before killing herself during a trip for a cheer competition.

Investigators identified the victims as 11-year-old Addie Smith and her mother, Tanya McGeehan, of Utah.

They were staying at the Rio Hotel and Casino near the

Las Vegas trip. The team reported them missing after Addy failed to arrive at the competition.

Officers were sent for a welfare check Sunday morning. Las Vegas Metro Police Lieutenant Robert Price

describes what happened next. Officers arrived, met up with security, went up to the

room, and attempted to contact a mother and daughter in their room. They knocked several times

and they called into the room without any answer. Security later entered the room that afternoon

and found them both dead. Police believed it was murder suicide. Investigators said a note was left, but did not release its contents.

The trip had begun normally. Addy attended practice and appeared fine the day before the competition.

Teammates grew worried when she disappeared. A team parent spoke to KTVX.

They had a very early call time to get to the event, and she was nowhere to be found.

So we called, called, called, sent messages, and nobody was able to get a hold of her.

Addie was a cheerleader known throughout the gym community.

Her former Utah Fusion All-Stars coach, Emily Morgan, remembers her.

Any kid that I get to work with, it is an honor for me. And for Addy, especially, it was a

privilege to be a part of her life and to be able to love her. Coaches say Addy motivated

teammates and lifted the mood during practices. The Salem Police

Department later confirmed Addy was the niece of a police sergeant and offered support to the family.

Court record show McGeehan and Addie's father went through a custody battle lasting nearly nine years
