All it takes is one photograph of the crystal blue waters and lush scenery to see why.

This place is idyllic.

But in 1974, all that changed.

Tens of thousands of people fled. Tourists stopped flocking to Verro all that

Maybe these are company towns that have failed or mining villages that are no longer in operation.

That would make some sense.

But in the case of Vereroia, the whole place went from thriving to frozen in time overnight. Why?
