Summary

Varenicline is a partial nicotine agonist that can be used to help patients quit smoking.

The two most common adverse effects that I have seen in clinical practice with varenicline are GI upset and insomnia/vivid dreams.

GI upset with varenicline can be reduced by giving the drug with food and a full glass of water. A dose reduction may also be considered.

Patients should identify a goal stop date for smoking cessation prior to begininng the use of varenicline.

Good little study guide, whether you're just looking for a

0:22.2

refresher in clinical practice or whether you're going through pharmacology classes, preparing for

0:27.2

board exams, whatever the case may be there. Just a great little thing that I put together based upon

0:32.9

my experience in taking exams and working in clinical practice for several years.

0:40.6

So with that, let's get into the drug of the day, and that's going to be Verenaclean.

0:46.5

Brand name of this medication is Chantix.

I do see it used a fair amount, definitely, and the primary and pretty much the only use I see it used for is smoking cessation.

Now, how does this drug work? How does it help patients stop smoking?

1:04.8

So if you remember, nicotine receptors play an important role in the body, and they really give that reward,

1:12.9

that positive feedback from the action of smoking and ingesting nicotine from tobacco products.

1:22.6

So what Verenicline does is actually partially, it's considered a partial agonist, so it partially

1:28.8

stimulates those nicotine receptors.

1:33.0

So it gives you a little bit potentially of that reward sensation.

1:38.6

But what it also does when it stimulates those receptors, it helps block those receptors from the full nicotine

1:50.0

action that you get from smoking, for example. So again, this drug blocks the action of that

1:57.0

nicotine, which helps reduce the reward of smoking.

2:02.6

So if you remember that dopamine or dopamine in the central nervous system gives

2:09.6

that reward type feedback.

2:11.6

So Verena Clean helps kind of reduce that reward potential. In addition, there is possibility it can help reduce withdrawal
