When Steve Panky was arrested on October 12, 2020, for the murder of Janelle Matthews,

it made the national news. A two-time gubernatorial candidate and dided for killing a girl in decades-old

cold case, the headline seemed shocking. But there was a guy back in Idaho who wasn't

all that surprised.

You know, I was kind of saying, well, good, I'm glad they got him. You know, and hopefully

they'd get him tried and convicted. That's all right, really, you know, thinking back

over the years of Panky, what he's done and all those things.

Walt Femling was a long-time sheriff of Blaine County, Idaho, where Panky had lived for

much of the time since the mid-1990s. And during Femling's time as sheriff, his deputies

were constantly answering calls about Panky. Femling would hear that Panky was at a school,

threatening teachers, that Panky had gotten into a nasty dispute with someone in town,

but there was some kind of altercation at Panky's home.

Femling said officers knew not to go to the Panky house without backup.

When you had a confrontation or you needed to talk with Stephen Panky, he did not take

it lightly. He was almost like, he viewed us as, you know, an enemy or something. And

he went on a tirade or cursed or yelled or whatever. He made threats to a lot of people

that crossed, you know, his path.
