In 2008, a small production company called Summit Entertainment developed an adaptation

of a vampire story by Stephanie Mayer which was published in 2005. It was in many ways a traditional

vampire horror romance story in the vein of Buffy and Angel, the story of a teenage human girl

falling in love with a boy who happened to be a vampire. But the vampires in this particular

story were different to many of the creatures we had seen in horror cinema previously. They were

kind and considerate to humans. They were framed from drinking blood. They walked around during

the day. And when exposed to direct sunlight, they sparkle. Much to the surprise of critics,

audiences and even the people that made the film, Twilight became a huge international and commercial

success, drawing in a predominantly teenage audience who would cue round the block to see the film

multiple times in the cinema. The film spawned four sequels released consecutively over the next

four years. And while critics and horror fans continue to hate on these movies, their fan

popularity only grew. The Twilight series went on to gross over $3.4 billion, making a list stars

of its two lead actors and solidifying its place as the most successful vampire franchise ever made.
