Joining us on the podcast today, our Finch Fulton, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Transportation

Policy with the U.S. Department of Transportation and Jonathan Morrison

Chief Council at the National Highway Safety Administration.

They're going to be walking us through an important rulemaking that was

published last month related to automated vehicles.

It's kind of interesting between all the driverless deployment announcements last month and of course the Aurora acquisition of Uber ATG I feel like

this kind of flew under the radar as far as news in the self-driving realm.

But it's an important one because the advanced notice

of proposed rulemaking is one of the first big milestones

and the government's attempt to set standards in a framework

for automated vehicle safety.

A lot of people have been wondering

where the government has been,

why only voluntary standards so far, and Finch and Jonathan kind of go a long way toward

answering some of those questions. That's not all we're talking to them about today, of course. They kind of hint at another rulemaking that could be

published in the coming weeks, the closing weeks of the Elaine Chow administration at

U.S. DOT. This one related to whether FMVSS could be amended perhaps to account for vehicles that don't have

traditional controls. So we will talk to Finch and Jonathan about that. We will talk to them about whether we need similar

rule-making for level two systems. We'll talk about some of the kind of big milestones in recent years,

including the AV Inclusive Design Challenge

and the demo grant program that Finch had a big hand
