Summary

This episode has been a US Open-style challenge. And we have shot somewhere in the mid-70s, only hoping to make up some ground on the field in episodes to come. Iain is in Oakmont, Eddie drops in briefly from France (at which point Laurie Canter also gives us his thoughts on his first US Open) and Andrew joins from semi-consciousness at about 2 in the morning. Iain and Andrew give the full review of JJ Spaun's remarkable victory, Bob McIntrye's near miss and they all chat about Rory and what lies ahead for him this year.

And in years to come, I will look back on the night I stayed up until 2 o'clock in the morning to see JJ Spawn win the US Open and then talk about it.

Ian Carter, our regular special guest, is in Oakmont.

0:43.9

We will be hearing from Eddie Pepperl later on, but he's doing a sort of special appearance

0:48.3

because at the moment he's fast to sleep in France somewhere, but we will drop in a little chat with him.

0:54.1

Ian Carter's

0:54.6

not fast asleep. He has just seen what is just about the longest shot I've ever seen to win

0:59.6

a major. Well, it meant he won by two, but what a dramatic finish on the final green. It

1:06.2

fair woke me up, Ian. Something else for JJ Spawn. Yeah, it was incredible, wasn't it? And, you know, for j j spawn yeah it was incredible wasn't it and you know

1:12.6

for a for a while there it just it was just one of those championships that continue to confound

1:19.3

every step of the way and because bob mcintyre had had played brilliantly to shoot 68 68 and had done all the hard bits and set the

1:31.7

clubhouse target at one over par.

1:33.6

And you just got that sense that that might be enough, A, to win it, or at the very

1:38.5

least, to get into a playoff.

1:40.3

And then spawned with his T-shot on the drivable par four 17th just a brilliant shot to what was it

1:47.6

about 20 feet two putts birdie and that meant that he had to par the last now he moves the ball from left

1:54.4

to right and anyone who was moving their drives from left to right on the 18th were ending up in the

2:00.3

rough and if you ended up in the rough.

2:04.3

And if you ended up in the rough down the right-hand side, you didn't make par.

2:08.9

So even then, you're thinking, well, Bob McIntyre is going to be in a playoff here.

2:14.2

And he hit the most wonderful T-shot, found the fairway, knocked it onto the green.

2:19.1

He got very fortunate because Victor Hovland's approach went very close to Sporn's ball, but just a little further away. So we got a real good look at that because
