Summary

The great tennis just keeps coming at this US Open.

In part one, Catherine, David and Matt discuss Coco Gauff's special connection with the New York crowd and the way she’s been afforded time to grow her game and become a Grand Slam contender, the formidable form of Caroline Garcia, a five set win for Matteo Berrettini over the always fun Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, some minor aggro between Corentin Moutet and Casper Ruud, and Matt revises The Backhand List.

In the night session, did we see the best performance of Nick Kyrgios’ career? Why did he not know a very basic tennis rule? And what happened to Medvedev? Plus, as David and Matt head home on the media shuttle bus, there’s chat about Ajla Tomljanovic impressively backing up her Serena victory.

Well, we come to you between sessions here on day seven at the US Open,

0:25.5

ahead of an incredible night session in prospect, at least on paper between

0:29.2

Daniel Mervere and Nick Kirios. We're going to be catching up with that

0:32.8

at the back end of this edition of the tennis podcast, but we've already had

0:37.2

a heck of a day and there's so much to talk about. So, Catherine Whitaker, Matt Robertson

0:42.2

herself, we are convening around a nice little table in the media garden.

0:47.4

I've got a beer which could go horribly wrong because I've not won all week long.

0:52.0

So, don't know what to say. I'll be in at about 10 minutes.

0:54.8

How we do? A little bit sweaty.

0:58.0

Yeah, it is bit, isn't it? After an absolutely glorious couple of days here,

1:04.7

the humidity has shot up again and it is, it does ruin an ice day humidity, doesn't it? It is a real

1:12.0

party booper. Is it harder on TV as well? Yeah, yeah, don't want to get into too much detail,

1:20.5

but you have to have a shape where on TV. So, imagine sort of, you know,

1:25.7

wearing whatever you're wearing, having to look nice and not shiny and then also sort of having a

1:31.6

gusset and some high heels. You don't have the, I know it's, you know, get the violins out for me.

1:39.2

It's obviously, you know, there's nowhere I'd rather be and nothing I'd rather be doing,

1:42.6

but there's nothing as stressful in humidity as having to look put together.

1:48.3

But at least no glaring lights from a studio this time. Oh no, there are portable lights.

1:54.1

Ah, okay, so the, they still light us David, they like us not to look like we're in the dark.
