Summary
After all the off-court drama of the past few days, the excitement on day five at the US Open was to be found on the court. David is joined separately by Simon Briggs and Catherine to talk about it all.
Serena vs. Venus was a remarkable occasion, as expected, but Serena’s brilliance made it a one-sided contest. Has she sent a message to the rest of the field?
The match of the day was undoubtedly the four-hour epic between Karen Khachanov and Rafael Nadal. Is it time to raise our expectations of Khachanov? How much of a concern is Nadal’s knee for the rest of the tournament?
Elsewhere, Saturday’s order of play is another cracker. Eyebrows were raised when Federer vs. Kyrgios was scheduled for the day session, but David is on hand with an explanation. Will the conditions favour either player?
There will daily editions of The Tennis Podcast throughout the US Open fortnight.

| 0:31.4 | We all thought it was going to be about Venus and Serena Williams tonight. |
| 0:35.2 | It kind of was, Simon, but really, I mean, that was a bit of a damp squarebuff to what we saw this afternoon. |
| 0:41.7 | Yeah, I mean, that's equal to the most one-sided match they've ever played in the |
| 0:46.4 | 30 meetings, 6162, equal Charleston 2013. So, I didn't expect it to be that one-sided. |
| 0:55.3 | I thought Serena would have too much, but she did play in a way that would put the shivers up |
| 1:04.4 | a few of the other women in the tournament. I mean, Venus may not be playing her best this year, |
| 1:08.9 | but the serve is still a weapon to be feared. And the way that Serena returned, for me, |
| 1:13.6 | that was the most impressive thing. I mean, she hit half a dozen clean winners off the return. |
| 1:19.0 | She was driving a lot of other balls right back at Venus' shoelaces. |
| 1:23.3 | The point was really stacked in Serena's favour from the first couple of shots. |
| 1:31.9 | The rhythm was outstanding. I mean, I know Venus gives everything, doesn't she? |
| 1:35.6 | Because Venus doesn't mix it up. I mean, it's all hard and flat. She knows what to expect. |
| 1:39.9 | They practice together a million, a million times, so that helps, but still, |
| 1:45.2 | there's normally some element of competition in these matches. So, for Serena to roll the way she |
| 1:50.4 | did, then she told them her reality afterwards. That's the best I've played since I came back. |
