Good morning. I'm Kate Baldwin. It's Monday, May 4th. Here are the five things you need to know to start your day.

0:10.0

Number one, the straight. In what looks to be the most significant step by the U.S. government to try and reopen the vital shipping channel in the Middle East, President Trump says that starting today,

0:21.4

the U.S. Navy will be guiding civilian ships through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump's wording

0:27.0

exactly is this. For the good of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States, we have told

0:32.3

these countries that we will guide their ships safely out of these restricted waterways so

0:36.7

that they can freely

0:37.6

and ably get on to their business.

0:40.4

But what's left unsaid is really how, because U.S. Central Command also says that this

0:45.7

is not an escort mission, rather that the U.S. will use guided missile destroyers, more than

0:51.2

100 aircraft, and 15,000 service members to try to give

0:55.5

cover, if you will, to commercial boats that now decide to navigate the strait. What vessels

1:00.6

will take them up on this offer? Not known yet. Senior Iranian officials, though, are warning

1:05.5

any U.S. interference in the strait would violate the ceasefire in their view, just as peace

1:10.6

proposals are being traded between the two sides.

1:13.6

Trump is now calling the talks very positive just a day after, blasting Iran's latest offer.

1:18.6

And overnight, mediators in Pakistan said the U.S. agreed to hand over 22 crew members from a container ship seized at the start of the blockade last month.

1:28.7

Number two, the plane scare.

1:31.0

A wild series of events.

1:33.4

First, a United Airlines flight clipped a light pole.

1:36.2

Then the plane hit a delivery truck driving along the highway, but somehow everyone is okay

1:42.7

and the plane with 200 plus people on board managed to land without incident.

1:46.7

All of this happened Sunday afternoon as the jet was making its final approach to Newark.
