accusing President-elect Donald Trump

of attempting to overturn his defeat in the 2020 election.

Earlier, the special counsel, Jack Smith, had formally applied for the case to be dropped

because of a long-standing policy by the Justice Department

that bars the prosecution of a sitting president.

Mr Smith also said that he would not pursue charges accusing the former

president of mishandling classified documents after leaving the White House. We heard more from our
