After what was perhaps a better night's sleep last night, people in the US are digesting the results of this week's election.

And what was a remarkable political comeback by the now president-elect Donald Trump?

He won't actually be sworn in until January.

Nevertheless, the process of putting together his senior White House team, his cabinet,

and the wider administration begins now.

He's expected to start announcing the names of those he's chosen for the top jobs,

such as his chief of staff and secretary of state, very soon. And President Biden, for he remains

president for another two months, has invited his successor to the White House to discuss the

transition of power, a courtesy that Mr Trump didn't extend to Joe Biden back in 2020.

For Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party,

the sole searching into why they fared badly on Tuesday now begins.

Last night, Ms. Harris spoke at our old college Howard University to concede the election.

The outcome of this election is not what we wanted, not what we fought for, not what we voted for.

But hear me when I say, hear me when I say, the light of America's promise will always burn bright.

The truth is that many people in the US aren't feeling that sense of promise,

weighed down by the high cost of living, cited by so many voters as their main concern in the election.

One of the first swing states to declare victory for Donald Trump was Georgia.

The result was a major upset for the Democrats

who'd won that state four years ago from the Republicans.
