Summary

In this podcast, we’re going to talk about how to read urine test strips. If you’re interested in using urine test strips, this video is going to simplify them for you.

Urine test strips are not made to diagnose anything. They are simply there to give you clues to potential irregularities in your body.

Most urine test strips test 10 things:

1. Protein - Too much protein could be a sign of kidney disease, dehydration, intense exercise, or a kidney stone.

2. Leukocytes - High levels could suggest an infection, UTI, or kidney stone.

3. Ketones - A potential sign you’re on a low carb diet, or you have diabetes

4. Glucose - Levels higher than 180 could indicate diabetes.

5. Nitrites - This could be a sign of nitrate-reducing bacteria, such as E. coli or gonorrhea.

6. Blood - Could indicate UTI, intense exercise, or kidney stones.

7. Urobilinogen - Could be a sign of liver damage, cirrhosis, or hepatitis.

8. pH - Levels between 6 and 7.5 could indicate uric acid stones or too much protein.

9. Specific gravity - Highly-concentrated urine could indicate dehydration.

10. Bilirubin - Could be an early sign of liver damage or a blocked bile duct.

I want to teach you very simply how to read these little urine test strips.

0:26.6

You can buy them online and they will give you some general information on what's going on inside your body

0:32.6

just by exposing them to urine.

0:35.6

And then these different little parts of it change different colors,

0:38.1

and you can get different ideas on what's going on. These urine test strips are not meant as a

0:43.0

full diagnosis. They're just going to give you clues because there's a lot of other factors,

0:47.3

but at least it'll narrow things down to kind of get you looking into a certain direction if there's

0:52.2

something that is not normal. But I'm going to make

0:55.5

this as simple as possible. Normally these strips have like 10 different things to look at.

1:01.1

And let's just kind of go down the list. So the first one is protein. If there's excess protein

1:05.9

in the urine, potentially there could be kidney disease or dehydration or you just worked out intensely and that's why

1:14.7

because when you exercise that can break down certain proteins that can end up in the urine also it could be a

1:22.1

kidney stone okay that's protein then we have leukocytes would be white blood cells. That would be a sign of an

1:29.5

infection. It could be a UTI. It could be a kidney stone. It could be some type of infection

1:35.8

anywhere in the kidney or the bladder or the ureters. Number three, ketones. If you are on a low-carb diet, then ketones will show up. But let's say you're not

1:48.5

on a low-carb diet and you have ketones. That would mean you have diabetes. Let's talk about glucose.

1:54.5

If glucose shows up in your urine, that means that your blood sugars are over 180 milliliters per deciliter. So that would mean that

2:04.6

you're a diabetic. Number five, nitrites. Okay, there are certain bacteria that are involved with

2:12.5

nitrites. So if there's nitrites, then that means that potentially there could be E. coli or gonorrhea or

2:21.3

some other bacteria that is breaking down nitrates, okay, which I'm not going to get into chemistry,

2:27.6

but just realize that certain bacteria will, if they're thriving, increase this right here.
