What is up everyone? Welcome back. Hope you enjoyed yesterday's episode on eight native trees for the Midwestern area that you can use this fall today though. We're going to be going back into the city. We're talking about urban permaculture. What is it?

And why, if you live in an urban area, is it something that you should try? So, you know, if you've heard

of permaculture before, you know that it is based on using the land and working with nature rather than radically transforming nature to produce what we want. But when we get down into the

into the urban environment you might say well there really isn't a lot of

nature around so how can you use the word permaculture in an urban environment it just doesn't make sense?

Well you're right in a way you need to figure out ways to work around and with the place that you live in if you live in an urban place.

So I used to live in a condo in a downtown area and you know I'm on the fifth floor.

It's hard to grow a lot of stuff, what can I do?

Well, I started to look at my condo and the inputs and outputs of my condo,

as well as the growing areas, and I said, okay said okay well let's just pretend that this is a farm

this is my land and the places and the businesses and the people around me are

parts of that landscape.

And so how do I use what I have

to get as much as I can out of this condo

that I'm living in?

And so here are some of the ways that I approached it.

So first of all, you have to conserve your space

because you don't have much of it.

So what I did is I did a lot of container gardening.

I did patio hanging raised beds. I did

vertical planting so vertical gardening so vertical gardening is going to be a big feature of anyone doing urban permaculture because you're growing up and not out

Most people in an urban environment have more vertical space because you're growing up and not out.
